Limiting Salt in Processed Foods

The government recommends only a teaspoon of salt a day and less for older Americans. But Americans typically get at least twice that much, mostly from dining out and processed foods. So now, the Center for Science in the Public Interest is asking the FDA to re-classify salt, limiting the amount allowed in processed foods.

"Split this in half you're getting 2,500 milligrams, more than a whole days' worth of sodium from half a package. It's astonishing," says Michael Jacobson, with the Center for Science in the Public Interest.

High sodium intake has been linked to high blood pressure, and heart disease, the nation's number one killer.
