WATAUGA COUNTY, NC (WBTV) -

Snow is expected to fall heavily in the North Carolina mountains Friday. Officials are ready for up to two feet of snow.

Taylor Marsh, Watauga County Assistant Emergency Management Coordinator, said he and other public safety officials met Thursday morning to plan for the impending winter storm. He said officials are expecting anywhere from 12-18 inches of snow, and that 24 inches could be a worst-case scenario.

"The biggest thing we're doing right now is working with NCDOT, looking at the most problematic areas historically in the county-how we can better prepare ourselves for those areas," said Marsh.

Marsh said he expects Friday’s storm to bring the most snowfall the area has seen since 2009.

He said that residents of Watauga County are encouraged to stock up on food, water, and medications prior to the storm. He said stores and pharmacies could be closed the next few days depending on weather conditions.

“The minimal chances of us getting out and having to find a stranded vehicle or somebody that’s wrecked, if you can stay indoors and avoid that, it really helps all of us out up here,” explained Marsh.

Marsh said that if residents absolutely have to drive, they should try to avoid back roads that haven’t been treated by the NCDOT.

He said that historically the western part of Watauga County has received the most snowfall, but he expects the entire region to be covered Friday.
