FAIRBANKS, AK (KTVF/CNN) - They say desperate times call for desperate measures.

The upcoming Iditarod dog sled race, which begins Saturday in Anchorage, will receive snow by rail.

Snow is melting in Anchorage, so the Alaska Railroad hauled about 300 cubic yards of snow from Fairbanks to make sure the race can get underway.

A race official said that has never been done before.

The Alaska Dispatch News said the section of the race going through Anchorage has been cut from 11 to three miles because of lack of snow.

Eighty-five mushers and their sled teams are set to be on the Starting line Saturday.
