At a time when demand for cotton is struggling, growers of the number one crop on the South Plains got some good news earlier this month when Marriott International announced that they will provide "Made in the USA" towels and bath mats in every guest bathroom in almost 3,000 U.S. hotels.
Standard Textile, which has facilities in Thomaston, Georgia, and Union, South Carolina, will produce the terry products with 100 percent cotton fiber grown in the United States, and Marriott says the agreement with Standard Textile will create 150 new jobs here in the USA.
This certainly is good news from a cotton producer’s perspective, because anything that creates additional demand for homegrown cotton will benefit the industry and help keep our growers in business and our region’s economy turning.
