Consider This: Undefeated Lady Chaps make Lubbock proud

It's not often basketball takes center stage in West Texas.

Usually football reigns supreme. But Monday afternoon, the LCU Lady Chaps stole the hearts of South Plains sports fans everywhere.

LCU won the Division II National Championship, finishing 35-0. Undefeated. Not a blemish on their record. Their accomplishment, in and of itself, is amazing. But even more amazing is how this team sacrificed to achieve this ultimate goal.

Two players, Nicole Hampton and Kelsey Hoppel, sat out an entire year. They knew this team was good. They waited for LCU to be NCAA eligible. They wanted to give their teammates and coaches the best chance to win a championship.

I want to personally congratulate Coach Steve Gomez and his Lady Chaps. They epitomized teamwork, discipline and sacrifice. That's the heart of West Texans.

Consider this...

We owe them all a debt of gratitude and appreciation for once more putting Lubbock Texas on the map in a positive light by winning this national championship.

I encourage all of us to honor and support the Lady Chaps and what they stand for. There will be a celebration for them at the Rip Griffin Center, Thursday at 5:30 p.m.

KCBD will be there live streaming all of the festivities for your viewing pleasure.
