Dr. Mimi Zumwalt is a world champion weight lifter in her age group.

As an orthopedic surgeon, she says it's good for kids to work with lighter weights because it can help them gain bone strength and increase coordination.

But she says kids need supervision with some guidance from a certified trainer so they don't injure themselves.

She explains that an injury at or near the growth plate can have lasting effects on a child.

"If it involves the growth plate and if it's not recognized right away and they keep walking on it, and injuring it, it could stop the growth on one side and make the limb grow more crooked over time."

That's why she says it's important for a child's injury to be x-rayed to make sure there is no risk to the growth plate and before it could be re-injured and make the situation even worse.

Dr. Mimi Zumwalt would like everyone to know that the TTUHSC is hosting a Speakeasy Soirèe: Charity Gala and Casino Night. The event is supporting several charities in Lubbock including TTUHSC's free clinic.
