LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

Are you a woman over 35?

Or have you experience several miscarriages?

Is there a concern in your family about a genetic disease that could be passed to a child?

Dr. Jennifer Phy is a Fertility Specialist and Texas Tech Physician.

She says there is amazing new technology available in Lubbock for couples trying to have a baby.

It's called Preimplantation, a technique for patients undergoing Invitro Fertilization. Their embryos are screened before they are moved into the mother's uterus. So, it's an opportunity to get what could be lifesaving information before the embryo is placed inside the mother.

Dr. Phy says, "The goal of the technique is to not just rely on the outside appearance of the embryo, but to take a few cells, just 5 cells from the placenta to be able to determine some genetic information."

She explains that with PGS, or Preimplantation Genetic Screening, you can tell before the embryo is placed inside the mother if that embryo has the basic normal number of chromosomes.

With PGD, or Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis, you can take that a step further and actually screen for a deadly disease that runs in families.

Dr. Phy says they have had many successes in Lubbock already. She adds, "The goal is one healthy baby at a time, not necessarily choosing a boy or a girl."

Next week is Fertility Awareness Week and the theme is Start Asking.

Dr. Phy says that's important advice to couples.  Even though infertility isn't diagnosed until a year after trying to conceive, she says if you're trying to have a baby and frustrated, you should a "Start Asking" your doctor about it at whatever point you are concerned.

These websites were recommended by Dr. Phy if you would like to learn more about new fertility techniques:
