Not too thrilled about donning the chemical spray all summer long?

Many in the U.S. are worried about the Zika virus and the possibility of it cropping up in the Heartland.

Now is a great time to safeguard against those mosquitoes; and it's as simple as the plants you put in your yard.

"Simply planting lavender or petunias close to your patio can help keep pesky mosquitoes away all summer long."

Horticulturist Melissa LaPlant said the wonderful aroma throughout your garden can also mask your presence to mosquitoes.

"Beautiful flowering plants like marigolds and mums release a scent that helps repel insects," he said.

Some greenery is most effective when the leaves are crushed and applied topically.

"I'm a big fan of rosemary," LaPlant said. "I have that by my back door and when I go outside I just clip some and rub it on my face, around my ears and on my arms."

A few other effective mosquito-repelling plants are ageratum, lantana and lemon thyme.

The great news for those without a green thumb: all these plants are easy to grow.
