LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech freshman Steven Gingery was named the Big 12 Co-Newcomer of the Week on Monday afternoon after helping lead the Red Raiders to a 9-2 series-clinching victory last Saturday at Kansas.

This is Gingery’s first career weekly award as joins fellow freshman Davis Martin as the only two Red Raiders to receive top newcomer honors this season. Martin previously earned the accolade on March 21 after picking up the win in Tech’s Big 12 opener at Baylor.

Gingery pitched seven shutout innings en route to helping the Red Raiders clinch their sixth Big 12 series win of the season. Tech went on to earn its fourth Big 12 series sweep of the year against the Jayhawks, matching the single-season school record from the league’s inaugural 1997 campaign.

The Jayhawks struggled offensively against Gingery, who posted four strikeouts and allowed just three hits on his way to his third win in Big 12 play. Only one Kansas runner reached scoring position against Gingery before he departed with a 9-0 lead to start the eighth inning.  Gingery, who matched the longest outing of his career, was the only Big 12 pitcher last week to toss at least seven shutout innings in a conference series.

Big 12 opponents are only hitting.198 against the southpaw, which marks the second-lowest average among conference pitchers. Gingery closed the weekend among the Big 12 leaders in league play as his 1.67 ERA versus conference hitters ranks third overall while his three wins are tied for fifth and his 33 strikeouts are seventh.

The Red Raiders close their eight-game road trip Tuesday night when Tech travels to face Abilene Christian. First pitch is slated for 6:30 p.m. at Crutcher Scott Field in Abilene.
