LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

The city of Lubbock Health Department says it is seeing an increase in Shigellosis cases.

Last year, there were no cases by this time in May. Already this year, there have been 110.

Shigellosis is basically a bad diarrhea that can hang on for up to a week. It can also bring other symptoms, like a fever, vomiting and stomach cramps.

Health officials say the best way to avoid it is with frequent handwashing, especially after a diaper change, since the disease spreads through the unwashed hands of someone who is infected.

Ironically, some people who have Shigellosis may not be affected at all.

But particularly in small children, the complications can be deadly.

Since Shigellosis brings about 500,000 cases in the U.S. every year, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has set up a good website with lots of information on the disease.
