LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

South Plains residents are used to seeing military aircraft in the sky. Often, those aircraft are coming from the Cannon Air Force Base in Clovis, home to the 27th Special Operations Wing.

The base in Clovis, not far from Lubbock, conducts combat support missions, close air support, unmanned aerial operations and a variety of other special missions. The Air Force is pouring $1.25 billion into Cannon Air Force base, home to almost 6,000 military personnel.

"I am immensely proud of our air commanders here on the base and I think the community should be as well." says Colonel Benjamin R. Maitre.

These men and women are coordinating daily operations that span thousands of miles around the globe. It's a daunting task that requires skill, intelligence and drive.

"We always have folks and aircraft overseas, sometimes it can be a domino game making sure we time that appropriately," Maitre added.

It's a demanding job. The airmen at Cannon Air Force Base have to balance duty and family time, working long hours with these million-dollar aircraft.

"We talk about the military, we talk about our patriotism, but it's for our family. For my son.. who's just yey tall." says Major Russell Cuena.

Cannon Air Force base is a hub of unique operations, daily thrills, cutting edge military technology, and insane adrenaline rushes.

"There are planes on this base that are very unique and their impact is global. It is definitely global." Cuena says.

We ask him for details and he just smiles. Protecting Top Security secrets is part of the job.

As the tactics for protecting our country change and America faces different kinds of enemies, the Special Operations crews will be the eyes in the sky - even when our country's enemies think no one is watching.

You and your family will have the chance to tour displays of aircraft on Memorial Day weekend, when the base is open to the public.

Colonel Maitre says it's important to hold events like these: "So we can show them what we do and what we're capable of, because that, ultimately is what we owe back to our country and our nation and the defense of America."
