LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

30,000 Americans go to the emergency room every year with a severe food allergy and as many as 200 die.

May is Food Allergy Awareness Month.

Dr. Goutam Shome, an Allergist/Immunologist at Covenant, says if you notice a rash when a child is eating, it needs to be addressed.

He explains, "The most common type is the skin manifestations, an itchy rash in or around the mouth. But in severe cases, which can happen in one third of the patients with food allergies, they can have lip swelling, tongue swelling, throat tightness, even breathing problems like an acute asthma attack."

Dr. Shome says any reaction needs to be checked because what you think is a peanut allergy, for example, could instead be a reaction to something in the milk.

And even though there is no cure, if an allergy is identified, then it can be avoided.
