No. 5 Red Raiders take opener against West Virginia

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

The 5th Red Raiders moved to 8-0 in Big 12 series opening games as they edged West Virginia 2-1 Thursday night.

Prior to the first pitch, the team received their Big 12 Championship Trophy, their first since 1997 and then went out and played like the No. 1 team in next week’s conference tourney.

Trailing 1-0, the Red Raiders scored 2 in the 7th to hold on for the win.

 Hayden Howard got the win in relief going 3 innings and not giving up a run. He moves to 8-2 on the year.

The Red Raiders move to (39-13 overall and 18-4 in the Big 12). Game 2 is 2pm tomorrow at Rip Griffin Park.

    This year’s homecoming theme is “Tales of Texas Tech: Published 1923” and will offer several events for students and the Lubbock community. Red Raiders are gearing up to celebrate homecoming week. This year’s homecoming will kick off Monday (Oct. 16) and end Oct. 21 with the football game against Iowa State at Jones AT&T Stadium.

    Texas Tech's Zach Smith  made program history on Thursday when he was named as one of 20 players on the prestigious Karl Malone Award Watch List. Smith is the first Texas Tech player to be recognized by either of the five preseason watch lists for honors presented by the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame.
