Recognizing 9-1-1 Operators

They are the first to respond to almost any emergency, but you wouldn't even know them on the street.

That's why the Lubbock Police Department is recognizing their 9-1-1 operators during this National Telecommunications Week. On Wednesday the LPD opened it's doors for a tour of their facility, City employees and members of the media were able to look through the emergency operations center or EOC, and the 9-1-1 dispatch center.

9-1-1 Operators respond to a call every 8 seconds. On average they take 300,000 calls a year.

Wednesday's gathering was in an effort to recognize the folks that work tirelessly behind the scenes and do a tremendous job.

Making a Kit for an Emergency Situation
When preparing for a possible emergency situation, it's best to think first about the basics of survival: fresh water, food, clean air and warmth.
