LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech senior Eric Gutierrez became the 33rd Red Raider in school history to be named an All-American on Thursday as he was a second-team selection by Collegiate Baseball.

Gutierrez, the Big 12 Player of the Year, earned All-American honors for the first time in his career as he is the first Red Raider to be recognized by Collegiate Baseball since Cameron Blair garnered third team honors in 2005.

This is the second-straight season where a Red Raider has been recognized on an All-American team as Cory Taylor was honored by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) in 2015. Gutierrez is the first Red Raider hitter, meanwhile, to receive All-American honors since Jamodrick McGruder in 2012 (NCBWA, Baseball America, CollegeBaseballInsider.com).

Gutierrez has helped pace the Red Raider offense this season as he enters this weekend’s NCAA Lubbock Regional with a .345 average to go along with a team-leading 12 home runs and 53 RBI. He currently ranks second in the Big 12 in home runs, RBI, hit-by-pitches (16) as well as slugging percentage (.624).

Gutierrez is also among the league leaders in total bases (123), on-base percentage (.472), walks (36), runs scored (49) and batting average (.345). He led all Big 12 players in conference-only games for home runs (7), RBI (23), total bases (62) and slugging percentage (.729).

His senior season has statistically been among his best in a Red Raider uniform has he has already set career highs for batting average, runs scored, slugging percentage and on-base percentage. He has also matched the most home runs of his career as well.

Gutierrez’ strong season has bolstered his legacy among the top players in school history as he enters this weekend ranked among the top 10 in nearly every offensive category. In addition, Gutierrez has started in all 234 games of his career which is currently the longest active streak in the country.

Gutierrez and the Red Raiders begin the NCAA Lubbock Regional at 2 p.m. Friday afternoon when Tech hosts Fairfield inside Dan Law Field at Griffin Park. The game will air live nationally on ESPN3.
