LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech senior catcher Tyler Floyd was recognized for his work in the classroom on Thursday afternoon as he was named the Big 12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year in a vote by the conference coaches.

Floyd, a native of Stephenville, Texas, is the first Red Raider in program history to receive the award which was created by the conference prior to the 2012-13 academic year.

Floyd has been a mainstay behind the plate for the Red Raiders this season, starting in 37 games heading into this weekend’s NCAA Lubbock Super Regional. The senior is hitting .232 on the year with a home run and 16 RBI.

In addition to his work on the diamond, Floyd has been among the most successful student-athletes on campus as he has maintained a perfect 4.0 grade-point average throughout his tenure at Texas Tech. Floyd is a two-time Academic All-Big 12 first team honoree as he was the only Big 12 baseball student-athlete in both 2015 and 2016 to be nominated with a perfect 4.0 GPA.
Floyd has already earned his degree from Texas Tech as he was honored as the highest-ranking graduate in the exercise sports science program during commencement ceremonies this past December. He is currently pursuing his master’s degree at Texas Tech.

Floyd and the Red Raiders open the NCAA Lubbock Super Regional with a 7 p.m. first pitch Friday evening against East Carolina. The game will air live nationally on ESPNU.
