Wayland Baptist football coach Butch Henderson recently received the Greg Sherwood Service Award.

The Greg Sherwood Service Award is named after Greg Sherwood, a football coach in Dalhart, Kermit, Spearman and Plainview, among other stops, and longtime athletic director for Lubbock ISD before retiring in 2001. Sherwood died Sept. 15, 2006.

According to the ASCO All-Star Classic web site, "The Greg Sherwood Service Award epitomizes what service, leadership, and character are about in the education field. Greg Sherwood was a big supporter of football and athletics in the entire West Texas region. He earned many successes throughout his career."

Henderson, who was presented the award June 11 during the ASCO All-Star Weekend in Lubbock, said receiving the award was "really special.

"Coach Sherwood spent a lot of time mentoring me. For some reason he took a real interest in me. We ran a lot of the same offense, and we spent a lot of time not only talking X's and O's but just about kids."

Henderson said Sherwood later hired him at Lubbock Coronado High School.

"I was one of his first hires after he became athletic director in Lubbock," Henderson said.

Henderson is about to begin his fifth season coaching at Wayland after a lengthy high school career, mostly at Borger High School and Lubbock Coronado High School.

Wayland Baptist play its home football games at Plainview ISD's Greg Sherwood Memorial Bulldog Stadium.

Past recipients include Bob Purse, John Cardinal, Ronny Flowers, Johnny Taylor, Steve Parr, Gary Gaines, Don Cumpton, Bobby Davis, Larry Dippel and Dennis Cavalier.
