Texas Tech Student Dies Following Crash With Van While On Motorcycle

A Texas Tech student has died from injuries he received after a hit and run accident early Sunday morning.

Cody Hughes was driving his motorcycle North on University Avenue around one o'clock Sunday morning. Police say the driver of a van failed to yield the right of way to Hughes and collided with his motorcycle. The driver of the van, Elaine Martinez fled the scene and turned herself into police hours later.

35-year-old Martinez is charged with Failure To Stop and Render Aid. Those charges may be upgraded since Hughes died at University Medical Center Monday morning. The22-year-old was a Junior at Texas Tech in the College of Arts and Sciences.

NewsChannel 11 spoke with friends of Cody's Monday, and they say he will be missed.

"Cody was going to be successful at whatever he did, he had a good head on his shoulders and everything inline. He was just a great kid and was going to make it far in the world, it's too bad he had to leave us so early," said Aaron Bolm, Cody's friend.

Cody was also a drummer in a local band and worked as an electrician at the Texas Tech Health Sciences Center.
