This week is significant for cotton growers across the South Plains, as signup begins for the Cotton Ginning Cost-Share Program, which will provide about 300 million dollars in much-needed assistance to growers nationwide.
Industry leaders commended Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack and the USDA for creating this short-term solution to help cotton growers face challenges including low prices, high input costs, and growing competition from heavily-subsidized foreign producers – all factors beyond their control.
The cotton industry generates about 80 percent of the agricultural economic activity within 80 miles of Lubbock, so this is a meaningful boost to our producers and our overall economy.
