LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

You might think of diabetes as a disease where people just can't eat sweets.

But the American Diabetes Association says there are  more than 230 thousand death certificates every year that list diabetes as an underlying or contributing factor.

That's why that diagnosis comes with an urgent need for understanding and control.  Yet, Kali Richards, the outpatient chronic disease case manager at UMC, says there are so many people who ignore that diagnosis until there is trouble.  She says the scary part is not having diabetes, but ignoring it… because it can lead to limb amputations and other debilitating conditions.

So, Kali says that's why UMC is planning a FREE 6 week class to help people learn to manage their diabetes and keep their lives under control. There will be 4 sets of classes at different locations around Lubbock.  Patients over age 18 and any family members are invited to attend and learn more about living with this disease.

The first session starts Tuesday, July 5 and continues weekly to August 19th from 2 to 4 at the South Plains Food Bank.

Two other sessions start on Wednesday, July 6th and continue weekly through August 10th, but with two choices.  The first is from 2 to 4 every week at the South Plains Food Bank. Or, if you prefer a later meeting, another session begins on that same day from 6 to 8 at the Salvation Army.

And finally, the fourth session begins on Thursday, July 7th and continues weekly through August 11th from 1 to 3 at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church.

Remember, all these classes are Free!

Best of all, they could make a difference in patients living longer and enjoying life more.
