EUGENE, Ore. – Texas Tech track & field opened the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials on Friday, July 1, with three athletes competing at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.

The Red Raiders had two entries in the 400-meter dash, one current and one former standout. In heat four, Kyle Collins picked up a third-place finish with a time of 46.04 seconds. His time would just miss the cut at No. 17 in the field.

In heat five, Texas Tech record holder and former standout Gil Roberts won heat five of the event to automatically advance to Saturday’s semifinal after posting a time of 45.40 seconds. His time would be the second-fastest among the first round field.

Roberts will compete on Saturday, July 2, at 3:46 p.m. CDT looking for a spot in the final.

Hannah Carson opened in her first of two events at the Olympic Trials, competing in the discus qualifying round. After fouling her first attempt, Carson got on the board with a toss of 54.53m/178-11, jumping up to No. 16. However, her final attempt would land at 51.80m/169-11, as she would finish 17th and not qualify for the final round.

Carson will take on the javelin qualifying round on Thursday, July 7, at 5:30 p.m. CDT.
