LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

The CDC says it has been working on something new that appears effective in fighting the mosquitoes that carry Zika and this pesticide is safe enough to drink.

It's called Nootkatone. The CDC has already licensed it to several companies.

"We're working very closely with the EPA, so that it could be brought to market as quickly as possible. It is food grade, generally recognized as safe, non-toxic, appears to be as effective as DEET against both mosquitoes and ticks," said director of the CDC Dr. Tom Frieden.

Nootkatone, the main ingredient in this new pesticide, is actually a natural organic compound that is the main reason for the aroma and flavor in grapefruit.
