MORTON, TX (KCBD) -

There is a lot of history here in Morton, some of it is tragic.

A marker and four memorial gravestones at the Morton cemetery remember the Buffalo Soldier Tragedy of 1877.

Following a Comanche party, the soldiers were led away from water holes as they traveled through Cochran County.

After several days without water, Captain Nicholas Nolan led his dehydrated soldiers to double lakes in Lynn County. The soldiers went 86-hours without water, and four died.

But, their expedition is not forgotten.

Morton and Cochran County also honor the service of veterans in foreign wars. The white, marble veteran's memorial stands on the courthouse grounds.

The memorial was dedicated back in 1971.
