SLATON, TX (KCBD) -

Slaton police are investigating a homicide/suicide after two bodies were found in a home on Friday morning, July 22.

Slaton police were called to the 1400 block of West Lynn Street around 10:50 a.m.

Police discovered the homeowner, Fred Henry Melcher, 74 and Edith Denise Ayers, 55, both dead in the home.

Police say no one is at large and the house was secure.

Slaton Chief of Police Trevor Barnes said, "Whatever happened was between the two people inside the residence."

The Texas Rangers and the Lubbock County Sheriff's Office are assisting in the investigation. Slaton police say they will release more details once autopsy reports come in.

One neighbor, Janet Johnson, describes the neighborhood as a quiet, nice and safe place.

“Everybody just waves everybody as they drive by," she said.

Living on the street directly behind where an apparent homicide suicide took place this afternoon, she feels surprised and wanting to know what exactly happened.

“It’s a shock. It’s a shock and it’s sad," Johnson said. "You wouldn’t think something like this would happen in a small town.”

As the investigation continues, Slaton Police say no one else was involved besides the male and female found inside of the house.

He sends a message of reassurance to everyone living in this neighborhood and in Slaton.

“Most definitely, one hundred percent the house was definitely secure," Barnes said.  "There is no danger in this neighborhood at all at this point."

Meanwhile neighbors wait for answers, and send their thoughts those involved.

“My heart goes out to the family, and everything for them," Johnson said.
