Lamesa has been recognized by the military for the community's service during World War II.

During the war, Lamesa and Dawson County provided more men per capita for the armed services than any other county in Texas.

Lamesa Field was established in 1942 to give elementary and advanced glider training to army aviation cadets. The training field was deactivated in 1944.

Dawson is one of just five counties in the state to win the coveted Army Navy "E" award.

It's an honor presented during the war for excellence in production of war equipment.
