LEVELLAND, TX (KCBD) -

Two fires reported on early Monday morning are being investigated as possible arson.

According to the Hockley County News Press, the first fire was reported just at 5:29 a.m. in the 1600 block of Houston Street. The second fire was reported shortly after the first, in the 1500 block of 10th Street.

The first fire on Houston Street caused significant damage to the structure and Levelland Fire Marshal Jay McKay said it will be considered a total loss.

A State Fire Marshal was called to the scene with a canine to determine whether any accelerants were used.

The canine found a can of gasoline, but it was determined that it was not used to start the fire.

“Common flammable household items were used to start the fire,” said Jay McKay, Levelland Fire Marshal.

The state marshal and canine also went to the site of the fire on 10th Street.

“Grass clippings, some paper and boxes were used to ignite that fire,” McKay said.

“The investigation is still ongoing,” McKay said. Both houses were vacant at the time of the fires.  No injuries were reported.

Cheryl Smart confirmed that she and her husband Billy are the owners of the Houston Street property. According to the Hockley County Appraisal District, the 10th Street property is owned by Modesta Chavez.

The 10th Street property suffered $200 in damages while the Houston Street property suffered $35,000.

Ten firefighters and four units responded to the fire on Houston Street while two firefighters and two units fought the blaze on 10th Street.

The scene at Houston Street was cleared at 11:30 a.m. Monday and the scene on 10th Street was cleared at 7:15 a.m.
