VALLEY, TX (KCBD) -

The Valley Patriots have made the six-man football playoffs 16 years in a row.

This year is another season of high hopes as the Patriots drop down to Class 1A Division 2. They're preseason ranked No 6. Coach Brandon Smith says reaction was mixed about going to D2.

"They're excited about it and they were also disappointed. When UIL sent out the information, they still wanted to stay D1, but it's gonna be fun and exciting."

Losing Ashton Barclay to graduation, the Patriots still return 4 offensive and 5 defensive starters from a 10-2 season. Valley will run a gridiron gauntlet in non-district facing Happy, Crowell, Guthrie and Paducah.

That should prepare them for District with Silverton, Hedley and Groom. The Patriots know everyone always gives them their best and they need to be ready.

"All summer long and even during the spring we were talking about it. It doesn't matter, you're still Valley and you're gonna have that bullseyes on you so you're gonna have to come out and work real hard."
