LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

It’s a nationwide movement, a call to do something positive for law enforcement officers. And part of the movement started from an online bible study that connects women across the country.

Monday will be "Back the Blue Day," with events in over 500 cities including right here in Lubbock.

Local event organizer, Sarah Hale, says when she decided to plan something for Lubbock officers, she never imagined the response from the community would be so incredible.

As Sarah was engaged in her online bible study called Beautifully Designed, the group’s leader brought up an idea.

"She challenged all of us in our community to participate in this event called Back the Blue," Hale said. "And so I thought I can do that in Lubbock."

So Sarah took to Facebook, hoping to gather ten families together to participate.

"Before I knew it, the event had been shared hundreds of times," she said.

Her expectations were quickly surpassed.

"I’ve just been amazed."

More than 200 local families and businesses have joined in, together raising thousands of donations.

"We ended up collecting over 1,400 drinks, 1,400 pre-packaged snacks. We have hand sanitizers, chap sticks, gum, candy," Hale said.

That was enough to donate not only to the Lubbock Police Department, but also to Texas Tech PD, the Lubbock County Sheriff’s Office, and DPS.

"I think every donation I’ve got has made me cry. From the smallest donation to the biggest donation," Hale said. "The community has just rallied together. I had no idea there were so many people out there that were interested in getting involved with something like this."

It’s something people of all ages have contributed to, including Sarah’s children.

"To see them take initiative on some of these projects, and to want to help and not be told to help has been such a blessing," she said.

Everyone is now coming together with the goal of spreading gratitude.

"I just want our law enforcement to know that we support them. They are not alone out there protecting our community. They put their lives on the line for us every single day," she said.

These small acts of kindness are creating an impact larger than Sarah ever thought was possible.

"This has just been overwhelming," Hale said. "And I’m just so proud of the community and everyone who has rallied behind us."

Back the Blue will take place Monday, August 1st, outside of the Lubbock Police Department.

Sarah says if you are interested in joining, come at 3 p.m. for a prayer over the officers, and she says to wear blue!
