LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

As of Thursday, August 4, the South Plains Food Bank has declared a volunteer emergency.

They are in need of volunteers to help pack boxes Thursday, Friday, and Monday as the need for food grows greater than current access to volunteers.

David Weaver, Chief Executive Officer of the South Plains Food Bank, communicated just how much they need volunteers. “We are distributing more food boxes than we can prepare right now,” Weaver says. “We have food boxes we need to make as well as 10 pallets of potatoes and five totes of apples that we need to get bagged and distributed as soon as possible.”

Weaver says the shortage of manpower is attributed to unforeseen circumstances battling the warehouse staff at the Food Bank. “We had one staff member suffer a death in the family, and several others were sick. We have no volunteer groups scheduled to come in, and we are getting desperate.”

The Food Bank is encouraging anyone who is available today, tomorrow, or Monday to head over to the 5605 MLK Blvd as soon as they can.

Any questions can be directed to Meagan Bratton at 763-3003.
