São Paulo, Brazil - Former Red Raider soccer player Janine Beckie opened Team Canada's Olympic run in record fashion, scoring the go-ahead goal in Wednesday's opening round match with Australia.
Beckie gathered a pass from Canadian captian Christine Sinclair and fired a one-time shot from inside the eight-yard box to put Canada up 1-0 after just 21 seconds of play, making it the earliest goal ever scored in an Olympic soccer match. The goal by Beckie marked her seventh international goal this season and makes her Canada's scoring leader this season.
This is Canada's third consecutive appearance at the Women's Olympic Soccer Tournament. Four years ago in London, Canada won a historic bronze medal, the nation's first in a summer team sport since 1936.
Canada will be back in action on Saturday at 1 p.m. CT as the team will face Zimbabwe. All of the 2016 Olympic soccer matches will be streamed on NBCOlympics.com.
