They're creepy and they're crawly, but their venom could hold the key to unlocking cures and treatments for a lot of illnesses. I'm talking about spiders, most people hate them but researchers with a company called Natural Product Sciences have been studying them for 20 years.
Researchers have been milking the venom from spiders to look for some therapeutic value. It turns out their discoveries have had a profound effect on the treatment of many diseases.
"For the treatment of hyperthyroidism, first in renal failure patients and then later, they have an approval letter from the FDA in patients not yet on dialysis but with early stages of renal failure," says Dr. Hunter Jackson, with NPS Pharmaceuticals, Inc.
Dr. Jackson says they are broadening their studies now to investigate spider venom in the treatment of schizophrenia, anxiety, neuropathic pain, reflux disease, short bowel syndrome, crone's disease and osteoporosis.
This study might not keep you from stepping on spiders, but it may give you some appreciation for what you smashed.
