SOUTHAVEN, MS (WMC) -

A dog is embarking on a long road to recovery after its owner said the animal was beaten and left paralyzed by a teenager.

The pit bull was attached to a chain when a witness said a 14-year-old neighbor came on the property and hit the dog’s back with a baseball bat. The dog is now paralyzed.

5-year-old Bella is described as a happy and sweet dog, but now she has to drag her back legs around the yard to move around.

"She tries so hard to get up and walk around but she can’t,” Jessica Hickman said.

Family members their neighbor attacked and paralyzed Bella. A family member was sitting on the couch when the boy walked up to the front lawn and attacked the dog, breaking her back and paralyzing her instantly.

"We just had to figure out what to do in our daily routine,” Hickman said.

Bella is unable to get around or go to the bathroom on her own.

"We have to squeeze her belly to get urine to come out,” Hickman said.

Southaven Police Department is investigating the case.

The mother of the teen neighbors believe paralyzed Bella was surprised when we told her what happened to the dog.

"I'm really sorry to hear about that, but no one has spoken to me about it," she said.

Meanwhile, a local group is helping Bella move around on her own. Hearts of Gold Pit Rescue purchased a hot pink wheelchair for Bella.

The family said they cannot wait to see the dog able to move on her own once again.

"She wants to run and play,” Hickman said.

The family said they hope to get the wheelchair in the next few days, but Bella cannot use it until all the sores on her legs are healed.
