Mae Simmons to host Back 2 School Kickoff

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

Mae Simmons Community Center and Lubbock County Voices Coalition/Starcare will be hosting their 8th Annual Back 2 School Kickoff on Saturday, August 20, 2016, from 9 a.m. to Noon. 

Participants will enjoy hot dogs sponsored by Sonic Drive-In, live music, giveaways, information booths and backpacks with school supplies for the kids.

This event is free, and all ages are welcome to join in the fun.

Children must be present to claim their backpack. 

A big thank you goes to Amerigroup who has contributed 1,000 backpacks for this event.  We are also grateful to the many local businesses and organizations that have generously contributed school supplies to fill the backpacks.  Backpacks will be given away to children and youth in Grades K-12. 

Mae Simmons Community and Senior Centers are located at 2004 Oak Avenue (East 19th and Oak Avenue).  Hours for the Community Center are Monday-Friday from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m., and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.  

The Senior Center is open Monday-Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.  For more information, call 767-2700 or 767-2708.

    The crash involving a motorcycle and a pedestrian happened just before 8 p.m. near 50th and Ave. V. Officials say the pedestrian, who was crossing 50th Street, was hit by a motorcycle. The pedestrian died at the scene. The pedestrian has been identified by police as 33-year-old Quisha Rotay Cook.
