In just one week, students across the South Plains will head back to school.

And one thing on every student's back to school list is a new haircut.

Mr. Fresh N Clean Barbershop on Buddy Holly Avenue gave free haircuts to the boys from the Children's Home of Lubbock on Monday.

Mr. Fresh N Clean Barbershop recently opened up next door to a salon called To Dye For Hair Studio.

To Dye For has been giving back to school cuts to the girls from the Children's Home for a few years now, so one of the barbers at Mr. Fresh N Clean decided they wanted to give back, too.

It may seem like a simple thing, but for the boys at the Children's Home of Lubbock, this back to school haircut means more than just a few inches off their hair.

"Everybody needs a fresh haircut for back to school," Mr. Fresh N Clean barber John Romo said.

A fresh haircut can build confidence as they take on a new school year.

"Knowing that they're going walk in on that first day and look just, perfect," Romo said.

That boost of self-esteem puts smiles on these kids' faces, and a sense of pride in their hearts.

"This here today, kind of sets that stage for them. And the last thing the kids need to feel is like they're second to best. They need to feel number one, especially with the trauma and everything that they've gone through," Children's Home of Lubbock President Jimmy Moore said.

Barber John Romo had been looking for a way to help the community.

"Just the smiles on the kids' faces," Romo said. "It feels good being able to do something nice and make sure that these guys look great their first day, the way everybody should."

"If you can just guesstimate, what $15 to $25 for a haircut, and the number of kids that are coming through here today. We are so fortunate to have people in the community that give back to the kids."

John hopes each fresh cut will lead to a chain reaction of small acts of kindness for those who need it most.

"That's what it is. You get the ball rolling and make other people want to help. And it's just good all around. It inspires helping."

With the combined efforts of Mr. Fresh N Clean Barbershop and To Dye For Hair Studio, close to 60 students from the Children's Home of Lubbock received a back to school haircut.
