LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

Today the Mae Simmons Community Center and Lubbock County Voices Coalition/Starcare hosted the 8th annual Back 2 School Kickoff.

The event provides hundreds of kids with necessary supplies so they're ready to take on another school year.

"Right now, we have a lot of parents, single parent homes; we have a lot of grandparents raising grandkids," says the center's supervisor Shameca Wilson. "So, I think just every bit helps and it keeps the people who come and get the supplies, coming back for the following year. I think the importance of providing these school supplies helps out tremendously."

Wilson said over 2,000 backpacks filled with supplies were available.

The leftover backpacks will be taken to Dunbar, Alderson, and Ervin elementary schools.
