Texas Tech standout Gil Roberts will be returning from Brazil with a gold medal in hand.
Roberts ran on the third leg of the relay for the U.S. team in the 4x400-meter relay Saturday night at Olympic Stadium in Rio de Janiero. The U.S. had the lead when Roberts received the baton, and Roberts increased that margin he handed it off to the anchor leg.
The Americans won with a total time of 2:57.30.
Another Red Raider, Michael Mathieu, also medaled. Running the second leg for the Bahamas, Mathieu helped his squad secure a time of 2:58.49. That was good enough for third place a a bronze medal. Mathieu also won a silver in 2008 and a gold in 2012 as a member of the relay.
The medals by Roberts and Mathieu make eight total won by Red Raiders track and field athletes and nine overall among all sports.
