LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

Coming off a 5-6 playoff season, the Monterey Plainsmen drop down from Class 6A to 5A. With three offensive and seven defensive starters back, Coach Wayne Hutchinson can't wait to get the season started.

"They were really perky this morning. Starting school. They're hopping around. Very excited. They know it starts counting now. Our kids are hungry this year."

Monterey plays a tough non-district schedule facing Odessa High, Abilene Wylie, Canyon Randall, Midland Lee and Stephenville.

"We have a tough task ahead of us, but that's what we want. We want to make sure we don't leave any stones unturned. We want to play good opponents so we can see what our strengths are and what our weaknesses are. If you want to be the best, you have to play the best."

In District 4 of Class 5A with Coronado, Lubbock High, Monterey, Abilene Cooper and Lake View.

"We want to make the playoffs. We're focused on a district championship. We have our goals set high. We expect to reach those goals."

Monterey opens the season Friday at Odessa.
