LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

After a 72-year hiatus away from football, the Wayland Baptist Pioneers begin their 5th season, 4th playing under Coach Butch Henderson.

The Pioneers get the season started Thursday night at 8 p.m., visiting Lyon College. Coach Henderson likes what he sees from his team.

"They have got after things real well in the offseason. Our preseason workouts, 2-a-days, kids have come in great shape. We're ready to go. We're actually sitting down in there at 2 days away. We'll be the first college football game in the United States when we play Thursday night in Arkansas. Long way to travel, but I feel good where our kids are, real good what they've done in the summer to come in here ready to play."

Butch Henderson has been a blessing to local high school football. Having coached at Coronado for 23 years, he's now giving athletes from all of our area high schools, a chance to extend their careers and play college football.

"There are a lot of great football players in West Texas and we want them all to be able to come to Wayland and play football. Really proud of the young men. I think that as people are able to see great plays they make, they'll say I remember seeing him playing over here. There are a lot of West Texas young men here with us."

Wayland Baptist's home opener is September 10th hosting Sul Ross State University 2pm in Plainview.
