Over the past few months, we’ve shared with you each week about what it takes to produce the food on our plates and the clothes on our backs.
Experts say one-third of our economic activity here on the South Plains is directly tied to agriculture, so the industry shapes not only Lubbock, but our surrounding communities.
Agriculture generates about $4 billion per year from what actually is produced and sold, but that doesn’t include extended economic impact from growers buying things like seed, fertilizer, fuel, equipment, and supplies from local businesses, or the tens of thousands of jobs supported by crop production.
The risk producers and their bankers take each year is an essential part of what keeps our economy turning, so agriculture must remain strong and viable.
