Former Congressman and State Representative Pete Gallego issued the following statement upon learning of the passing of Nelda Laney, wife of former five-term Speaker of the Texas House of Representatives, James E. "Pete" Laney:

"María Elena and I join countless others in mourning the loss of Nelda Laney, a former First Lady of the Texas House of Representatives. We send our condolences, prayers and love to Speaker Pete Laney and the entire Laney family. Nelda Laney was, in her own right, a force for good in the Texas House. She was Speaker Laney's partner and strength - but even on her own, she was still a force of nature.

"It was Nelda Laney who initiated the Texas Capitol Christmas ornament tradition that has raised untold sums for the preservation of our state's Capitol. And, it was Nelda Laney who worked tirelessly to restore the Capitol and preserve the many original artifacts and furniture still in use in the Texas Capitol today. Nelda also saw to it that the children and families of members were made to feel at home in the Capitol - as were the many visitors and guests she welcomed to the House chamber.

"Nelda Laney was a remarkable woman who made a big difference in our state. She will forever be in our hearts - and enshrined in our Capitol's history."

Congressman Randy Neugebauer released a statement regarding Nelda Laney's passing:

“Our hearts go out to Pete and the rest of the Laney family on the passing of Nelda Laney, a true treasure of West Texas. She served Texas with honor and distinction. Nelda’s legacy of love will live on through her children and grandchildren, and she will be remembered for her many contributions to the Texas State Capitol, Texas Tech University, and Hale Center. Our state has lost a great Texan, and Dana and I lost a friend.”
