Wayland Baptist’s De’Sean Johnson and Alden Mann have been named the first Central States Football League Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week of the 2016 season. Johnson and Mann helped lead the Pioneers to a season-opening 37-14 win over Lyon College last Thursday in Batesville, Ark.

Johnson, a 5-foot-7, 180-pound freshman running back from Austin, averaged over four yards per carry as he gained 75 total yards on 18 carries. He ran in an 11-yard touchdown and also had two receptions for 10 yards.

Mann, a 5-10, 200-pound senior linebacker, tallied 14 total tackles, including three solo stops and 11 assisted tackles. The NAIA All-American recorded two tackles for a total loss of four yards and had a pass break-up in the game that saw Wayland’s disruptive defense force eight turnovers.

The CSFL Special Teams Player of the Week is Lyon College kicker/punter Osvaldo Espericueta, who punted five times for a 42.4 yard average. He also had three kickoffs that averaged 60.3 yards per kick and was 2-for-2 on PAT kicks.

The Pioneers are off this week before making their home debut Sept. 10 against Sul Ross State beginning at 2 p.m. at Greg Sherwood Memorial Bulldog Stadium.
