The Red Raiders dominated Stephen F. Austin in their season opener, and team leader Patrick Mahomes showed a full Jones AT&T Stadium all his moves in a 69-17 win for Tech.
The junior quarterback threw a total of 487 yards and four touchdowns. He also led the team on the ground with 57 rushing yards and two touchdowns.
1st quarter scoring:
Texas Tech got off to a hot start, marching down the field on its first possession. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes led the Red Raiders on a 10-play, 75-yard drive that culminated in 13-yard touchdown toss to Cameron Batson.
Running back Keke Coutee scored the Red Raiders' second touchdown on the team's third drive. He took a six-yard carry to paydirt to finish off a 4-play, 45-yard drive.
Mahomes capped an 8-play, 69-yard drive in the final minutes of the quarter with a 3-yard TD run.
2nd quarter scoring:
It was the same song, second verse to begin the 2nd quarter. The Red Rainder went on another long, 78-yard drive. Mahomes ran for his second touchdown with a six-yard scamper.
Mahomes threw for his second touchdown of the night just a minute later. He connected with Jonathan Giles for a 22-yard strike. Giles has four receptions for 89 yards to lead Tech receivers.
Inside the five minute mark Mahomes threw his third touchdown of the game, this time tossing and eight-yard pass to former high school teammate Dylan Cantrell.
Mahomes threw for 407 yards and three touchdowns and also ran for 57 yards and two touchdowns in the first half.
The Red Raiders added to the scoring barrage late in the 2nd quarter with a 31-yard field goal off the foot of Clayton Hatfield.
3rd quarter scoring:
Coach Kliff Kingsbury decided to keep Mahomes in the game. The young man did not disappoint. He tossed his fourth touchdown of the night, this time hitting Devin Lauderdale on a 14-yarder. That concluded Mahomes' night.
Clayton Hatfield connected for his second field goal of the game, booting in a 43-yard late in the quarter to push the lead to 55-10 at that point
4th quarter scoring:
After a Lumberjack touchdown the Red Raiders scored there final touchdown of the game when backup quarterback Nic Shimonek hit Ja'deion High for nine yards.
Running back Corey Dauphine concluded the scoring with a 27-yard touchdown run.
Final score: Texas Tech 69, Stephen F. Austin 17.
