LUBBOCK, Texas – Despite a 2-0 performance last weekend, the Texas Tech soccer team moved to No. 24 in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) rankings, the league announced today.

By remaining in the top 25, the Red Raiders have now been featured in the poll for 19-straight weeks. Tech opened the season at No. 19 in the preseason rankings, then moved up each of the next two rankings at 16th & 15th, respectively. After suffering their first loss of the season two weeks ago in a ranked contest with then-No. 19 California, the Red Raiders found themselves at No. 22 in last week’s poll.

Tech (6-1-1) wrapped up their seven-match homestand with a 1-0 victory over Oral Roberts at the John Walker Soccer Complex on Friday, Sept. 9. The Red Raiders then hit the road for the first time in the regular season and posted a 2-1 come-from-behind win at Appalachian State on Sunday, Sept. 11.

In the shutout win against ORU, sophomore midfielder Jordan Duke tallied the lone goal in the 47th minute off a corner kick feed from sophomore defender Margaret Begley. The header made Duke the eighth goal scorer for the Red Raiders in 2016 and was the first of her career. It was also the third shutout of the season for senior goalkeeper Lauren Watson, moving her 6.5 away from the all-time lead at Texas Tech.

Trailing by one in the 61st minute on Sunday, sophomore forward Gwennie Puente screeched down the field, dodging and splitting the Mountaineer defense, before beating the keeper for the equalizer and her second goal of the year. Tech would take the lead 15 minutes later after a shot from freshman forward Tatum Barton was saved by App. State’s Steyl, but it careened off a Mountaineer defender in front of her and into the net for the go-ahead score.

The Red Raiders take a trip west to California this weekend to face Loyola Marymount in Los Angeles on Friday, Sept. 16, at 9 p.m. CDT, followed by a date with San Diego State on Sunday, Sept. 18, at 8 p.m. CDT.
