LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in this country, killing more than 42,000 Americans every year. That's according to the American Foundaiton of Suicide Prevention.

That group is hosting its 'Out of the Darkness Walk' at Texas Tech Sunday, Sept. 18, to bring awareness to the problem.

The foundation wants people to know, if you suspect someone is considering suicide, don't be afraid to ask.

Mariah Williams, spokesperson for the foundation says, "Nine times out of 10 people are going to say 'yes, I am' because they are already having those thoughts themselves. So, you need to just bring it out into the light and say 'How can I help you? How can I be a part of bringing you to healing?'"

This year's walk to prevent suicide is set for this Sunday at Texas Tech's Urbanovsky Park.

You can register online before noon on Friday or at the park at noon on Sunday.

The walk begins there at 2 p.m.

Money raised at the event goes to research, education and support for survivor families.

Thanks to walkers and donors, AFSP has been able to set a goal to reduce the annual suicide rate 20 percent by the year 2025.
