Texas Tech volleyball win streak ends in loss to Texas State

SAN ANTONIO – The Texas Tech volleyball team fell for the first time since opening weekend, suffering a 3-0 loss to Texas State Thursday in its first match at the RoadRunners Roundup. The loss snapped a 10 match win streak for the Red Raiders.

Facing a quick turnaround after Wednesday night's win at Rice, Texas Tech (10-3) was out-hit .293 to .136 for the match as the Bobcats (7-5) handed Tech a 25-21, 25-17, 25-20 defeat.

Senior Lauren Douglass led the Red Raider attack with nine kills, while freshman Chandler Atwood chipped in eight. Senior setter Marguerite Grubb served up 27 assists and added six digs, while sophomore Reyn Akiu tallied 14 digs to lead the team.

The first two sets belonged to Texas State as the Bobcats held the Red Raiders to .103 hitting in the opening frame to score a 25-21 win. The Bobcats, controlled the net in the second, blanking Texas Tech 6-0 in blocks and out-hitting the Red Raiders .323 to .108 to earn a 25-17 win.

The Red Raiders led 12-8 in the third set as junior Alyssa Ybanez poured in four kills early in the frame. Texas State, however, drew even at 12-12 and went on to claim the victory with a 25-20 win.

Texas Tech is back in action at the Roadrunners Roundup Friday with a pair of matches. The Red Raiders face Wichita State at 9 a.m., before squaring off with host UTSA at 1 p.m. All matches will be played at the Convocation Center with live stats available at GoUTSA.com.
