LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

An LCU basketball player is out on bond, facing a DWI charge after a Friday morning wreck

20-year-old Hunter Rahim Ates is facing a charge of driving while intoxicated, failure to ID, and possession of a false ID.

He has been released on a $9,500 bond.

LCU Sports Information Director Chris Due confirms that Ates is on the basketball roster, but could offer no other comment as of Friday night.

According to the police report, the crash happened just after 2 a.m. in the 5600 block of Marsha Sharp Freeway. There were passengers inside the vehicle at the time of the crash.

The police report states Ates told the officer he had not been drinking and that he was an Uber driver, but wasn't getting paid for it yet. He told the officer he was the designated driver for the night.

The officer reported Ates failed his field sobriety tests and he refused to give a blood or breath sample. The officer got a blood search warrant and had it signed by a judge. The officer then took Ates to the hospital to have his blood drawn.

The blood sample was turned into the DPS lab for analysis.

Police say Ates originally gave them a different name, and was arrested under that name until they got a phone call on Friday morning.
