LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

Wouldn't it be nice if you could do something to drug-proof your kids?

Bob Howell, a drug addiction counselor, says he's seen children in Lubbock as young as 6 years old with drug or alcohol problems.

But he says the best prevention starts with with good communication, and taking a big breath before over-reacting.

He suggests the effort starts with planning a meal together where everybody sits at the table as a family. A good routine is to take turns around the table with everyone offering something good and something not-so-good that happened to them that day.

Bob says parents should be careful not to stop the conversation.

He says, "When they come to you and want to share something really powerful and the reaction would be - you said what? you did what? That will close down a conversation immediately."

His advice: Listen without any initial reactions so that you can hear everything that they want to share or reveal.
