LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

The South Plains community will come together this weekend to support a Levelland man named Jamie Lopez who has muscular dystrophy and a special request.

Jamie is 33 years old, but is still in the same wheelchair assessable van he has traveled in for more than 20 years. It's a 1988 Ford Club Wagon with nearly 400,000 miles on it.

Ernestine Lopez, Jamie's mom, cares for him.

"I'll do anything for him," she said.

Ernestine has cared for Jamie since he was 7 years old.

"He was going to school and then the teacher noticed he was falling a lot," she said, "so that's when I took him to a doctor, and that's when they said that he had muscular dystrophy."

This disease is progressive, causing more weakness and loss of muscle mass with time.

"He got put in a wheelchair," she said, "so he couldn't do nothing."

About three years later, Ernestine bought their current van to change that.

"It only had 36,000 miles on it," she said.

The van served them well as countless doctor's appointments required a drive from Levelland to Lubbock.

"We're having a lot of trouble," Ernestine said. "We spend a lot of money every month trying to buy parts for it. I tell Jamie, 'It's getting expensive on the gas.' I say we need something small, that won't waste so much gas."

But the gas usage is not the primary concern for Allen Scott at AS Dent Shop in Lubbock.

"The brakes are spongey," he said. "It's not good...we need to get him a new van."

So Allen and his office manager, Krysti Agosta, invited Ernestine and Jamie to his dent shop, where they will host a car show fundraiser for them this Saturday.

"Every single penny is going to Jamie," Agosta said.

Allen and Krysti have never seen Jamie without a smile.

"He is the most positive person that I know, just sweet and charming and kind and just full of love," Krysti said, "and we just wanted to help him."

Jamie sends words of encouragement to Krysti nearly every day.

"He has a wonderful Facebook page, 'Jamie Motivation Lopez' and puts out wonderful positive messages every day," she said. "It means a lot."

Krysti and Allen intend to pay back that cheer after the Saturday event.

"We just want to help him have reliable transpiration so he can travel," Krysti said. "He enjoys traveling. He deserves to be able to do that."

Until then, Jamie will stick to his motto…to "Never quit...finish."

"We just take day by day and try to enjoy it," Ernestine said. "He's a fighter…he won't give up. He keeps going."

The fundraiser will take place Saturday at AS Dent Shop at 3034 Slide Road from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. or you can donate online at the link below.
