One of women's basketball pioneers from the late 40's and early 50's, has passed away.
Just a few weeks ago we brought you the story of Ruth Cannon Nichols. She was born and raised in Cotton Center, where she played high school basketball from 1948-1951. She then went on to play basketball for the Wayland Baptist Flying Queens from 1952-1955; winning 3 AAU Championships.
Ruth was part of the 1955 United States team at the Pan-Am games. The U.S. went undefeated against international competition. Her accomplishments have since been rewarded with induction into the Texas High School Basketball Hall of Fame, The Wayland Baptist Athletic Hall of Honor, and The Panhandle Sports Hall of Fame.
Ruth had been very ill with lung cancer. She died Friday at a hospital in Littlefield. She was 71-years-old.
