LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

The biggest story from Thursday's game against Kansas was the injury to quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

Mahomes was taken out of the game in the middle of the third quarter, after getting tackled hard on a 32-yard run. He was taken back to the locker room afterwards and didn't return to the game.

Coach Kliff couldn't offer any definite update about Mahomes injury Thursday night, saying "We have to get him looked at more extensively."

Patrick's father posted to Facebook that his son was "Ok" and probably would not need surgery.

But, in his place was Nic Shimonek and he shined bright against Kansas. Shimonek went 15 of 21, for 4-touchdowns in the second half of the game. Which was a sigh of relief for a lot of Red Raider fans, because he struggled in week 1 against Stephen F. Austin.

In this game the defense did what they were supposed to do, which was shut down a struggling Kansas offense. The Tech defense only allowed 296 yards to the Kansas Jayhawks, which is much improved over last week's 572 yards to Louisiana Tech.

When any information about the injury on Patrick Mahomes becomes available, we will be the first to let you know.

Texas Tech starts Big XII Conference play (1-0) after beating Kansas tonight 55-19. They will be back in action next Saturday, when they take on Kansas State on the road.
